What is depression? Low down on low feeling:
Everyone feels sad from time to time. Sometimes this grief is darker and deeper, and usually turns from one to the other when something terrible happens. But the depression I am talking about is more than just feeling sad. It is a feeling of sadness … despair … despair … misery … and numbness intensively and for longer periods of time than those sad, often for no apparent reason. Nothing seems worth the energy it requires.
Depression
Depression is a very stable condition. Your mind tends to behave and think in ways that make you feel depressed. Exercise will help, but you don’t feel it. Getting enough sleep helps you, but you suffer from insomnia. Seeing friends and doing the things you love can help, but nothing is fun, and you don’t want to overburden your friends and family.
Daily activities such as eating, cooking and getting out of bed feel difficult and crushed. Depression prevents you from recognizing your self-worth, feeling of accomplishment, and finding a goal in life. Those suffering from depression are prone to self-punishing thoughts of worthlessness and even guilt. It is a condition that spreads thoughts, emotions, behaviors and sensitivities about everything and often cannot be traced back to one specific operator.

Depression is characterized by at least five of the following symptoms:
- Depressed mood for most of the day
- Low interest in usually enjoyable activities
- Changes in appetite or weight
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Lack of energy
- Feelings of guilt and worthlessness
- Agitation or slowing physical movements
- Inability to concentrate or make decisions
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
The good news is that even if you suffer from any of the above symptoms, it is possible to reverse the course of depression. We can change the way we behave and communicate to cause an upward spiral of depression. You only need some positive feelings to start the process, which then begins to make positive changes in other areas of your life. Exercise, sunlight, specific sleep patterns, specific muscle movements, and gratitude all alter activity in specific neuronal circuits and reverse the course of depression. Watch this space for more in-depth conversations about these positive emotions and how we can do them together to reverse the depression.
