Plugs, plugs, sockets, sockets, whatever you want to call them – they are an essential part of every home and provide constant power to lamps, refrigerators, TVs and other devices that we could not live without.

Unfortunately, with sockets that are often used continuously for years without maintenance, they are prone to damage that can be overlooked. Failure to address a socket outlet can result in power outages, electrical fires, and costly repairs.

In our latest blog post we look at 6 significant signals that it is time to replace your sockets, along with some top tips to extend the life of your sockets.

    Electric Switches Temporarily

If devices connected to your sockets are sporadically switched off and then on again, first check that the device itself is not defective by connecting it to another socket. If the device works properly, this may be a sign that your outlet has been damaged. This can be caused by a number of problems, so it’s best to have it viewed or replaced by a professional.

    Heat Scorch Brands

Corrosion, dust accumulation, overloading and poor wiring can all cause sockets to generate excessive heat when used. If you notice scorching spots or hot plugs and sockets, switch off the wall socket before disconnecting devices; Failure to do so may cause electrical fire. Note that the socket may no longer be used until it has been properly inspected.

    Fuse Blues

Fuses that constantly blow can be very frustrating and can be caused by a number of things. If you have a fuse that continues to blow, try plugging the device into a different outlet. If it does not burn out, there is probably a problem with the outlet.

Cracks On the Power Outlet Plate

Over time, the plastic plates covering electrical outlets can become worn and crack. Cracks not only expose wires under tension, but can also pose a serious fire hazard due to the dust that settles in them. If you notice a crack, stop using that outlet until it is attached or replaced.

    The Green “Goo”

This stuff has many names, but can be characterized by its green appearance and high viscosity. The goo is broken down “di-isotyl”, a result of the reaction between the copper and the wiring insulation from 1965 and 1971.

If you notice this unwanted goo, you should contact a qualified electrician as soon as possible, depending on the severity and extent of the problem, a new wire may be needed.

    Sound Buy

A crackling, popping or buzzing sound from your outlet indicates that something is seriously wrong. This is called sparking and is usually caused by damaged or loose wires. Without being inspected, this can lead to a faulty plug or a more serious electrical fire.

Highest Tips for Preventing Damage To Your Connections

There is plenty you can do to reduce the risk of damaging your power outlets here are some of our best tips:

    • Never buy devices from indisputable stores or sellers. For example, it is known that cheap knock-off telephone chargers damage electrical outlets and cause electrical fires.
    • Visually inspect your sockets monthly for any of the signs above.
    • Always carefully remove the plugs, do not pull on the wire. This is something children can do unintentionally, so make sure your children understand the dangers of electricity.
    • Avoid overloading sockets with extension cables. Never connect one extension cable to the other, also called ‘daisy chaining’, as this can cause overheating.
    • Only use plugs with the British standard safety mark.
