How Can You Tell If Termites Are Active in Your Home?

Termites often work out of sight, which is why an infestation can develop before a homeowner sees obvious damage. Mud leads along foundations, timber that sounds hollow when tapped, blistering paint, warped trim and piles of discarded wings can all justify a closer look. None of these signs proves activity on its own, but several appearing together should be treated seriously.

The location of a sign matters. Subterranean termites usually travel between the soil and timber while trying to avoid open air, so sheltered entry points around slab edges, piers, garden beds and service penetrations deserve attention. Inside, skirting boards, door frames, window frames and built-in cabinetry can conceal damaged timber. Moist areas around bathrooms, laundries and leaking plumbing can also create conditions that make timber more attractive.

A useful homeowner inspection is visual rather than destructive. Check accessible edges of the building, keep stored items away from walls, look behind furniture where practical and note any unexplained changes in timber. Avoid breaking open suspected mud tubes or spraying insecticide into an area simply to see what happens. Disturbing a small part of a colony can make professional assessment more difficult without solving the underlying problem.

Prevention is largely about reducing easy access and correcting moisture. Fix leaks, improve drainage, avoid allowing soil or mulch to bridge inspection zones, and keep timber off the ground where possible. Firewood and renovation offcuts should not be stacked against the house. These steps cannot make a property termite-proof, but they can reduce conducive conditions and make future warning signs easier to spot.

If you suspect current activity, an inspection can determine whether the damage is old, whether live termites are present and what treatment options suit the construction of the property. Treatment may involve targeted products, soil treatments, baiting or a combination of methods, depending on the site. The important point is to identify the species, entry path and extent of activity rather than relying on a quick surface spray.

Successful pest management usually combines observation, prevention and treatment rather than relying on one quick fix. Keeping the property dry, tidy and easy to inspect can reduce many of the conditions pests use for food and shelter. It also makes new activity easier to spot. When a problem keeps returning, the source, entry route and harbourage should be investigated instead of repeatedly treating only the insects or animals that happen to be visible.

If you would like professional help assessing pest activity or planning treatment, Brisbane Termite & Pest Control can inspect the property and recommend an approach based on the pest, the building and the conditions present. Early attention is especially useful when activity is hidden, recurring or causing damage, because a targeted response can address both the immediate problem and the factors that allowed it to develop

Termite activity is also a reminder that prevention is an ongoing process rather than a once-off repair. Changes made during renovations, landscaping or plumbing work can create new concealed entry points or moisture sources, so areas that were previously low risk may change over time. Keep inspection zones visible, avoid covering slab edges with soil or garden materials, and investigate unexplained dampness promptly. If damaged timber is repaired, record where the damage was found and what treatment was carried out. Those records can help future inspections focus on known risk areas while still checking the rest of the property for new activity.
