A Brief History of Cricket in India

In India, Fantasy cricket is considered a religion. There are no specific theories about cricket origins in India, but because the British ruled India for more than 200 years, the game can be considered their legacy. India began playing cricket unofficially in 1721 but was provided official test status in 1932. They started playing their first test cricket match against England at Lords in London from June 25th to June 28th, 1932. At the time, India was led by CK Nayudu. India was the sixth team to play test cricket at the time. For a long time, India was regarded as a weak team on the cricketing circuit, and individuals used to hold practise matches.

The arrival of the First Foreign Team in India

An English team arrived in India in 1889-90. The captain of this department was George Vernon. Eventually, the first foreign Cricket team came to India, even though the matches it played here were not considered First Class Cricket matches. In 1892-93, two games were held in Bombay (now Mumbai) and Poona between Europeans and Parsees (now Pune). This is regarded as the traditional start of first-class cricket in the country. Between the 26th and 28th of January 1893, four First-Class matches were played between an English team led by Lord Hawke and an All India team.

    Competitions have been Introduced

India began expanding its competitions to include more teams and players after being granted test match status in 1932 when they played the England international team at Lord’s in London. Following record attendances at Test matches against Pakistan and New Zealand, Indian princes banded together to create the Ranji Trophy in 1935. The trophy was named after Sir Ranjitsinhji, prince of Nawanagar, who, despite playing for England, was regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world and was made an icon by his homeland.

    Developing into a Strength

India held the first official Test series in 1932 but did not achieve international success until 1952 when the Indian national team defeated England in a test match on home soil. Later that year, they would go on to win their first entire Test series against Pakistan. As a result, India gradually evolved into a fearsome adversary when facing a team on their home turf, fielding high-quality players and winning several Test series in the 1960s and 1970s. With the start of One Day Internationals, India was forced to move from defensive to offensive tactics. This proved to be a massive stroke of luck for the side, as they went on to beat the favourites West Indies in the third official ICC Cricket World Cup in 1983. Throughout the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, India produced many legendary players who are regarded as some of the greatest in the sport’s history, namely Sachin Tendulkar and Kapil Dev.

The Saga of the Bombay Presidency

From 1892-93 to 1906-07, Bombay Presidency matches will be played. These matches were changed to Bombay Triangular Matches in 1907-08, and they lasted until 1911-12. Since 1912-13, the matches have been known as Bombay Quadrangular Matches, only to be renamed Bombay Pentangular Matches in 1937-38.
