How do I know when I see a psychologist?

Life is full of challenges. We are often able to get through these things with the help of those around us and the skills and strategies we have acquired throughout our lives. Of course, everyone faces difficult periods in their lives – so when you’re struggling, it can sometimes be difficult to determine if it’s time to see a professional to help you overcome it.

In our busy world, stress and other emotional difficulties have become so natural that we sometimes believe that struggle is natural and not something we should try to change. However, emotional problems can lead to serious mental health problems, physical illnesses, and countless other issues.

People see psychologists for all kinds of reasons – including managing diagnostic mental health problems, sadness, adapting to life changes, coping with stress, changing inherent habits or ways of thinking, or many other difficulties. We know that early people get help, it is easier to overcome problems. This may seem obvious, but people often let their problems escalate before asking for help.

So how do you decide when it might be time to seek professional help? We’ve developed some pointers to help guide you.

The way you feel is on your way to the way you work daily

To a large extent, all mental health problems involve a level of functional impairment – that is, they hinder the way you work at home, at school, at school, or anything else you need to do. You may feel comfortable all the time, and you cannot concentrate, not be motivated, engage in arguments, or have any combination of difficulties. If your emotions limit your ability to cope with everyday life, it’s time to get help.

Your feelings multiply or become extreme or out of control

If your feelings are severe or disproportionate to what is going on, this can be incredibly exhausting. Feeling overwhelmed by emotions can indicate underlying problems and can affect all areas of your life. If you find yourself sympathetic about things that don’t usually bother you or are having trouble controlling your feelings, this is a sign that it’s time to work with someone who can help you develop skills to organize your emotions more effectively.

    You feel stuck

“I can’t move forward on my own” is one of the most common things we hear from customers. If you find yourself stuck somewhere, a relationship, a situation, or a cycle that you don’t want to be in, and you’re not sure how to change that, psychologists can help you solve this problem and make changes to improve your life.

You can’t stop thinking about what you are going through

We often assume that over time, we will overcome things – but sometimes this is not the case. It can be a shock, a death, a breakdown of a relationship – or just finding yourself meditating on what other people think. If you find that you get stuck and get involved in ideas, it may be helpful to ask for help to learn how to gain space from your thoughts and regain control of your life.

You don’t enjoy the things you’re used to

When things you usually enjoy start to feel bored, drained, or even hard to do, this is a clear sign that something is happening emotionally. Seeing a psychologist can help you understand this, improve your mood, reconnect with your values, and gain more satisfaction from fun activities.

    Your health is affected

There is more and more emerging research suggesting that our mental and physical health is inextricably linked. When we fight emotionally, it is common for our physical health to suffer as well. Stress can manifest in several ways, including bowel problems, headaches, muscle tension, weakened immunity, poor sleep, or loss of libido. If you are feeling jogging and there is no medical reason for it, it is worth considering whether there is an emotional cause that affects your physical health.

You use drugs, alcohol, food or sex to deal with it

When things get tough, we often look for things outside of ourselves to distract us. But if you find that you use materials or things to deal with your feelings regularly, it is helpful to think about talking about this with a psychologist.

    Your relationships suffer

When we don’t feel our best, it can often be passed on to the people closest to us. This may seem difficult to express yourself, feeling angry or angry, or withdrawing from relationships and isolating yourself. Human beings are social creatures, and we are connected by communication through the presence of people around us. Communication is incredibly important in maintaining good mental health – so if you find that your relationships have been compromised, this is a good time to get some help.

People around you express their concern to you

Often people can see things more clearly from the outside. If people in your life are worried about you or notice big changes in you, it’s an indication that something has turned out that you might need help.

If you notice any of the above, it’s time to take the first step and make contact with a psychologist. Working with a psychologist provides a safe and ungovernable place where you can learn new skills and strategies to improve your health.
