We had planned a “perfect honeymoon.” Kashmir had better ideas — and every single one of them was more beautiful than anything we could have imagined.
Where It All Begins
The Valley That
Changes You
I still remember the exact moment the plane broke through the clouds and the Kashmir Valley appeared below us — a patchwork of jade-green rice paddies, silver rivers, and snow-draped mountains so enormous they seemed to belong to another world. My wife Priya grabbed my arm and whispered, “Is this real?” I had no good answer.
That was the beginning of a ten-day journey that no travel blog, Instagram reel, or tour brochure could have prepared us for. We had chosen Kashmir for our honeymoon because of the photographs — the Dal Lake shikaras, the Mughal gardens, the meadows of Gulmarg. But what we found was something far more personal: a place that slows you down, strips away the noise, and insists that you actually look at each other.
If you are planning a Kashmir tour — whether for a honeymoon, a family trip, or a solo adventure — this is not a listicle. This is the honest, unfiltered account of what it truly feels like to be there, and everything you need to know to make it unforgettable.
Why Kashmir
Three Reasons This Valley
Is Unlike Anywhere Else
Four Seasons in One Place
Summer meadows, autumn chinars, winter snowscapes, and spring blossoms — Kashmir wears every season like a different masterpiece.
Intimacy Built Into the Landscape
Houseboat mornings, shikara rides at dusk, candlelit evenings on a frozen lake — romance is not manufactured here. It just happens.
A Culture That Feeds the Soul
Wazwan feasts, Kahwa tea at dawn, saffron-laced desserts — Kashmiri hospitality is the warmest welcome you will ever receive.
There is a Kashmiri saying — “Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast” — “If there is paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.” Mughal Emperor Jehangir said it. After ten days, we understood completely.
The Must-Visit Places
Seven Destinations
That Own Your Heart
Dal Lake, Srinagar
Your houseboat is not accommodation — it’s an experience. Wake to a floating vegetable market at your door and sunsets that set the water on fire.
Gulmarg
Asia’s premier ski resort in winter, a wildflower paradise in summer. The gondola ride offers views that make you question your vocabulary.
Pahalgam
The Lidder river running through pine forests. Baisaran meadows so green they hurt your eyes. A village pace that heals whatever the city broke.
Sonamarg
“Meadow of Gold” — aptly named. Glaciers within walking distance, streams that sound like music, and air so clean your lungs won’t know what to do.
Mughal Gardens
Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashme Shahi — terraced gardens where emperors once strolled. Built for beauty, they deliver it in abundance.
Old Srinagar
Narrow lanes, wood-carved mosques, artisans shaping papier-mâché and pashmina. History isn’t behind glass here — it’s alive and walking beside you.
Pahalgam was where we almost didn’t speak for an entire afternoon. We just sat by the river, watched the light move through the pines, and felt — genuinely felt — that everything was alright.
The Honeymoon Experience
What a Kashmir Honeymoon
Package Looks Like
Planning a honeymoon in Kashmir does not have to be complicated. Most couples opt for a 7-night / 8-day package — long enough to feel unhurried, short enough to leave wanting more. Here is what a well-crafted Kashmir honeymoon package typically includes:

Timing Your Visit
The Best Time to Go —
Honestly
Every season in Kashmir is somebody’s favourite, and that is not a marketing line — it is the truth. Here is what each season genuinely offers:
Spring (March – May)
The valley erupts with almond blossoms and tulips. Dal Lake’s famous Tulip Garden — Asia’s largest — is a riot of colour. Days are warm, evenings gentle. Ideal for photography lovers and nature walkers. Best overall season for first-time visitors.
Summer (June – August)
Peak season — and peak beauty. Green meadows, gushing rivers, pleasant 20–28°C days. Every Bollywood-famous landscape looks exactly like the films. Expect crowds, especially in Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Book accommodation at least 3 months ahead.
Autumn (September – November)
Chinar trees turn fire-red and amber. The air crisp, the sky impossibly blue, the crowds thin. Saffron harvest in Pampore fills the air with fragrance. Arguably the most romantic season — and the secret favourite of those who have been more than once.
Winter (December – February)
Gulmarg becomes a snow globe. Dal Lake freezes over. Cricket on frozen water, skiing, and steaming Kahwa by a kangri fire. For honeymooners who want isolation, silence, and white-world magic — winter is unbeatable. Pack serious layers.
From Someone Who’s Been There
8 Things We Wish
Someone Had Told Us
01
Hire a Local Guide
Not for the sights — for the stories. A good Kashmiri guide transforms every ruin, every garden, every meal into something you will still be talking about years later.
02
Put the Phone Down Sometimes
Yes, photograph everything. But also just sit there with no screen between you and the Himalayas. Some moments deserve your full, undivided attention.
03
Try the Full Wazwan
This 30-dish traditional Kashmiri feast is an event, not a meal. Order it at least once, preferably with a local family if you can arrange it.
04
Buy Saffron from Pampore
Genuine Kashmiri saffron is the finest in the world. Buy it directly from farmers in Pampore — not from tourist shops in Srinagar. The difference in quality is enormous.
05
Respect Local Customs
Dress modestly when visiting religious sites. Ask before photographing people. A small act of cultural respect opens more doors than any amount of money can.
06
Negotiate Shikara Rides
Set the price before you step in — politely but firmly. Evening rides around 4–6 PM hit the golden hour perfectly and are worth every rupee.
07
Check Travel Advisories
Kashmir is safe and welcoming for tourists — millions visit every year without incident. But always check official advisories and register your travel with your accommodation.
08
Leave Extra Days for Nothing
Build unplanned days into your itinerary. The best moments in Kashmir aren’t in any itinerary — they’re what happens when you’re not trying to get anywhere.
A Final Word
You Will Come Back
On our last morning in Srinagar, we woke before dawn and sat on the top deck of our houseboat wrapped in blankets, watching the mist lift off Dal Lake as the first light turned the Zabarwan mountains pink. A fisherman rowed past in absolute silence. A kingfisher landed on the railing for exactly four seconds, then left.
Neither of us spoke. We didn’t need to.
That is what Kashmir does. It does not just give you beautiful scenery or a checklist of experiences. It gives you moments of such pure, uncomplicated joy that you carry them with you for the rest of your life. It gives couples something even more valuable than memories — it gives them language. A shared private language of silences and sunrises and small incredible things.
We went back the following autumn. We will go back again. And if you ask any traveller who has truly spent time in the valley, they will tell you the same thing: Kashmir is not a destination. It is a feeling you keep trying to find again.
Book your Kashmir tour. Do it with intention, with curiosity, and with space for everything you did not plan. The valley will take care of the rest.
