Protective Packaging: How to Choose the Right One

by Soft2share.com

Adding a liner to a drum forms a protective layer between the substances being transported and the outer container. It is a form of protective packaging that many manufacturers use. But like all packaging options, there are different materials to consider. Choosing the right one depends on what is being transported.

What are Drum Liners?

Drum liners are a common and effective protective packaging solution. They are used in industrial areas where products such as paints, chemicals, pharmaceutical products and similar items are packaged. These liners are vacuum- formed meaning they don’t have seams but also reduce the probability of spills and leaks.

Types of Drum Liners

There are many different types of drum liners that can be used, and they are used across a range of industries and for a variety of goods.

·          Plastic drum liners – often used to transport food and other edible products, these liners are rigorously tested against a high set of standards and will often carry approval by food standard authorities.

·          Round bottom drum liners – vacuum formed and seamless, these types of drum liners eliminate excess waste. Ideally suited for storing pastes and powders as nothing gets caught in the corners and pleats, the amount of waste is also reduced.

·          Rigid plastic drum liners – these liners are also tested and approved by food standard authorities. Again, no seams and vacuum sealing reduces waste. These types of liners are commonly often used to transport paint, ink, coatings, food and cosmetic products.

·          Elastic band plastic drum covers – these liners cover the barrel to stop cross-contamination. Dust, dirt and moisture spoil the contents, something that liners protect against.

·          Drum cap sheets – these are used after a drum liner is inserted into the barrel. A cap sheet is placed over the top of the drum to completely seal off the contents to protect the contents from any cross-contamination.

The benefits of using drum liners

There are many benefits to using drum liners in any industry.

1.      Protection – drum liners are important as they help to keep the drums clean and to protect the inside of the drum from damage or corrosion.

2.      Safety – they also reduce the possibility of spills and leaks. Depending on the substance being transported or stores, leaks can be a potentially serious situation. Choosing a drum liner that seals goods into containers is clearly beneficial.

3.      Clean – using a drum liner means that the drum doesn’t become dirty or contaminate the next load to be stored and transported.

4.      Faster turnaround – another reason to switch to using drum liners is that it helps to increase the turn-around time for the reuse of drums. As the drums do not need to be deep cleaned due to the use of a drum liner, it is a matter of emptying the liquid from the liner and returning the barrel to the supplier to refill again.

5.      Cost-efficient – using drum liners brings cost-efficiency to the supply, transport and storage process. For example, the life span of barrels are increased thus, the need for investing in new barrels and drums is reduced. With some drum liners also being recyclable and re-usable, there are significant cost-savings across the board.

A solution for all industries

Drum liners offer protective packaging solutions that have the potential to bring significant benefits to manufacturers across a range of industries. A strong supply line is essential for all industries and that means opting for protective packaging that offers the right level of protection, no matter how the goods are transported or how long the process takes.
