What should be invested in making schools and colleges safer?

Security has become a top priority for schools and colleges in recent years. An increasing number of violent incidents in educational institutions has raised concerns about student and faculty safety. Hence, there is a need for schools and colleges to invest in providing effective security measures to prevent such incidents.

The security threats schools and colleges are facing are multi-layered. Cybersecurity threats such as hacking, phishing, and identity theft have become prevalent in educational institutions as they store sensitive student and faculty data. Furthermore, traditional threats such as theft, vandalism, and assault have become persistent concerns for school and college authorities.

In light of these security threats, educational institutions must invest in modern security measures to prevent and deter such incidents. One investment that is highly critical in providing school and university security is enhancing access control.

Access control refers to the measures used to control who has access to certain parts of a building, a campus, or a specific area. It involves the use of access control systems such as badges, keycards, biometric systems or turnstyle doors to ensure that only authorized individuals can access a particular location.

This investment in access control can provide multiple benefits for schools and colleges.  Firstly, it can prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the premises by ensuring that only students, staff, and authorized visitors are allowed on campus. This significantly reduces the risk of theft, vandalism, and other criminal activities.

Secondly, it can enhance campus safety by reducing the risk of violent incidents. Access control systems can quickly notify security personnel of any unauthorized access attempts, enabling them to respond quickly and effectively to deter or prevent violence.

Furthermore, access control provides a valuable tool for tracking and monitoring individuals on campus. In addition to restricting access, access control systems can generate real-time reports that show which areas are accessed, when they were accessed, and by whom. This information can help school and college administrators detect unusual behavior or suspicious activity and take appropriate corrective measures.

In addition to enhancing access control, other security investments that schools and colleges should consider include the following:

    1. Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) – CCTV systems can be used as a preventive measure to deter criminal activities. Additionally, recording images and incidents can assist in identifying individuals who have committed or attempted to commit a crime.
    2. Controlled access turnstiles– An controlled access turnstiles timely alerts authorities or on-campus security when an unauthorized person enters the premises. This can include the following: noise alarms, motion detectors, and physical barriers.
    3. Visitor Management – Visitors to the campus should be checked to ensure they have a legitimate reason for entry. Educating staff on how to identify and manage non-legitimate visitors.
    4. Threat Assessments – Conducting periodic risk assessments and identifying potential threats is paramount. This includes regular building security reviews and the ability to assess potential threats and anticipate risks.

In conclusion, ensuring student and faculty safety is a top priority for schools and colleges. While no system provides a 100% guarantee of security, implementing an access control system in addition to the other security steps listed above significantly reduces security threats. Schools and colleges should not make decisions based solely on cost without careful consideration of their environment and the potential risks they face. Therefore, School and college administrators should invest in the appropriate security measures that fit their environment and budgetary constraints. This investment in security features is just as important as investment in academic and co-curricular facilities.
