The Southeast Asia Automotive Upholstery Market was valued at ~USD 211.46 million in 2024 and is expected to grow at a strong CAGR of approximately 7.08% during the forecast period (2025-2033F),

The Southeast Asia automotive upholstery market is becoming a strategic focus, with the region becoming a vehicle manufacturing powerhouse across the world. With the increasing number of passenger cars produced, growing EV investments, and shifting consumer demands regarding comfort and design, upholstery is no longer a cost-related component but a value-addition to the vehicle interior. The manufacturers are moving towards product development to meet OEMs’ (original equipment manufacturers) demands, regulatory changes, and the demands of the aftermarket; the market is set to expand in the next decade.

    Manufacturing Strength and Regional Momentum

The automotive ecosystem in Southeast Asia is established, especially in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These countries facilitate mass car manufacturing processes, and they produce regular requirements of seats, trims, and interior materials. Competitive labor costs, growing clusters of suppliers, and favorable trade policies make the region even more attractive for upholstery manufacturing. With OEMs outsourcing more parts to lower costs and supply chain risks, upholstery suppliers are ramping up regional manufacturing capacity.

On September 13, 2025, Antolin inaugurated its new industrial plant in Indonesia. This facility represents a decisive step in the company’s growth strategy in Southeast Asia and was developed in partnership with local partner AAA, a joint venture between APM and ARMADA AUTOPARTS.

The new plant will initially produce headliners, with plans to potentially diversify into door panels, lighting systems, and integrated electronic solutions. These products are part of Antolin’s value proposition in modular and intelligent interior solutions, designed to simplify assembly lines and improve manufacturers’ operational efficiency.

Shift Toward Premium and Functional Interiors

The consumer expectations in Southeast Asia are changing rapidly. Besides quality, buyers are increasingly relating the quality of vehicles to interior comfort, aesthetics, and durability, particularly in passenger cars. Therefore, these factors increase the use of sophisticated seat covers, improved cushioning, and smooth-surface materials. The ergonomics and thermal comfort of upholstery are also being optimized and are consistent with both mass-market and premium car segments. Hence, the price per vehicle of upholstery is increasing.

    EV Expansion Reshaping Upholstery Demand

The rapid expansion of EV production in Southeast Asia is driving growth in the upholstery market, as the focus on interior design and material differentiation increases. EV platforms prioritize comfort, appearance, and a light interior, thereby increasing the value added by seats and trim per car. To enhance cabin appeal and strengthen brand positioning, OEMs are also incorporating high-quality, sustainable upholstery products. This shift is establishing a long-term need for sophisticated upholstery solutions and motivates the suppliers to invest in local capacity and innovation.

On June 29, 2025, VinFast inaugurated its electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Hà Tĩnh, located in the Vũng Áng Economic Zone, less than seven months after construction began. Spanning 360,000 square meters and with a designed capacity of 200,000 vehicles per year, this marks VinFast’s fifth manufacturing facility worldwide, highlighting the Vietnamese brand’s remarkable execution speed and strong industrial capabilities.

On December 15, 2025, XPENG entered into a strategic partnership with Malaysian manufacturing group EP Manufacturing Berhad (“EPMB”) to launch localized production initiatives in Malacca, Malaysia. This collaboration, with mass production set to begin in 2026, marks XPENG’s third project of its kind globally and its second in the Asia-Pacific region.

    Investment Trends and Strategic Alliance

The competitive environment has been characterized by alliances, joint ventures, and capacity-building ventures. The upholstery manufacturers are also working together with the material suppliers, design companies, and OEMs to jointly develop cost-effective and sustainable solutions. Also, the investments in automation, digital cutting, and optimization of processes are enhancing consistency and margins and facilitating high-volume OEM contracts. Regulatory and ESG pressures are also on the rise, and sustainability-oriented investments are becoming more popular.

Localization, EV Integration, and Interior Innovation Shaping Southeast Asia’s Automotive Upholstery Market

The automotive upholstery market in Southeast Asia will most likely improve in terms of localization, technology incorporation, and EV-based interior demand. Those suppliers that manage to have a reasonable balance between cost competitiveness and innovation, sustainability, and reliability of supply will be in the best position to capture growth. With vehicles becoming more of an experience-based product, automotive upholstery will continue to be at the core of differentiation and, as such, a major point of focus in the entire automotive value chain of the region.

According to UnivDatos the rising passenger car production, expansion of EV manufacturing, increasing demand for premium and comfortable vehicle interiors, growth of the automotive aftermarket, availability of cost-competitive manufacturing in Southeast Asia, localization strategies by global OEMs, and increasing adoption of sustainable and lightweight upholstery materials drive the Southeast Asia Automotive Upholstery market.
