Barger was born on October 8th 1938 in Modesto California to parents George Barger Sr., a truck driver, and Edna Mae Thomas. After dropping out of high school at age 16 he joined the United States Air Force where he served four years as an airplane mechanic before being discharged due to medical issues. After leaving the military he moved back home to Oakland California where he became involved with motorcycle gangs such as The Pissed Off Bastards Of Bloomington (POBOB) which later merged into what would become The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club (HAMC).
In 1957 Sonny took over leadership of HAMC’s Oakland chapter becoming its president until 2002 when it disbanded after police raids targeting members suspected of drug trafficking activities. During this time Sonny wrote several books detailing life within HAMC including “Hell’s Angel: The Life And Times Of Sonny Barger And The Hell’s Angels Motorcycle Club” which became a New York Times bestseller upon its release in 2000. In addition to writing, he also acted appearing on shows like “Sons Of Anarchy” playing Clay Morrow from 2008-2014 earning him both critical acclaim and financial success contributing significantly towards his current net worth.
