Those pesky sugar cravings always seem to hit at about 3pm which has us reaching for the chocolate cupboard/cookie jar… pretty much anything in sight to satisfy our sweet tooth. If you’re wanting to cut back on your sugar intake or simply want to make the swap to healthier treats, making your own homemade snacks is a great healthy habit to establish.
If you’re in need of easy healthy snack recipes or inspiration, Healthy Luxe has you covered. Healthy Luxe is an online nutrition platform run by Australian mother-daughter duo Jennifer Murrant and Hannah Singleton. The duo have set out on a mission to show people how satisfying, delicious and easy healthy eating can be. The girls have created a recipe app (called Healthy Luxe) that has a number of delicious recipes catering to a range of dietary requirements from gluten free, dairy free, nut free and refined sugar free to regimes such as paleo, vegetarian, vegan and pescatarian. They have an entire section of their app dedicated to delicious snacks & sides recipes which has everything from nut & seed crackers, hummus and kale chips to sweet snacks such as chocolate bliss balls, cookie dough protein balls, maple nut crunch bars and peanut butter cups.
Whilst it is becoming easier to find snacks in cafes/supermarkets that are marketed as ‘healthy’ or ‘natural’, they are often packed with unnecessary amounts of sugar and artificial additives to extend the shelf life. Making your own treats means you know exactly what is going into them and you are in control of how much sugar goes in. It is also significantly cheaper and most of the time, they taste a lot better, too. Once you’ve established the habit of making your own easy healthy snack recipes, there really is no turning back!
All of the easy healthy snack recipes on Healthy Luxe app are loaded with nutrients and contain minimal ingredients, making them quick and easy to prepare. You can make your snacks for the week ahead and simply store in the fridge to enjoy throughout the week. Each recipe includes a nutrition spotlight on a key ingredient within the recipe, so you can learn about the unique health properties of the foods you are preparing. Soon (launching November 2019) each recipe will also include a nutrition panel (back of pack style) detailing the macro and micro nutrients. This will be helpful for those following a particular
dietary regime whereby you need to be more mindful of protein, sugars, fats etc.
Other meals you can look for in the delicious snacks & sides recipes collection on Healthy Luxe app include flavourful salads that are the perfect accompaniment to your main dish. Some favourites include the super green salad with tuscan kale, truffle oil and parmesan cheese (or a vegan cheese alternative), the fennel and orange salad with pine nuts, as well as the peanut satay roast pumpkin which can be served as either a salad or a side. Other classics (made healthy) include sweet potato wedges, vegan cheese and Italian style Caprese salad.
