This easy to execute article will guide you on how to set up your Linksys RE6500 (AC1200) dual-band WiFi extender using the smart setup wizard.
Note: Prior to proceeding to the Linksys extender setup process, be certain that you have a WiFi network name (SSID) password (security key or passphrase) handy with you.
Step 1:
Place your Linksys RE6500 (AC1200) extender in the midway between your existing WiFi router and the area with a poor WiFi connectivity (dead spot or blind zone).
Make sure that your main WiFi router is up-to-date by the latest firmware version and it should throw active and live internet connection to manually configure Linksys range extender (RE6500).
Step 2:
Connect the antennas to Linksys RE6500 extender and its power adapter to an electric power source. For optimal performance, place the antennas of your range extender in upright (straight-vertical) position.
Step 3:
Wait for a couple of minutes for the LED lights on the top panel of your range extender to blink orange green.
Step 4:
Select a process for Linksys WiFi range extender setup
Wireless Setup: Using a desktop, laptop or a mobile device, connect to the Linksys extender’s default network name that is Linksys Extender Setup – xxx.
- XXX is the last 3 characters of your LinksysAC1200 (RE6500) range extender MAC address.
Wired Setup: Disconnect your connected device from the WiFi. Connect your device (computer or laptop) to the range extender via Ethernet cable.
Step 5:
On your connected device, launch a web browser. Type the default IP address (192.168.1.1) in the address bar.
Step 6:
When the ‘Welcome to RE6500 Setup’ screen displays, select your language and click on the ‘Start’ button.
Step 7:
After that, a screen will ask you how do you want to use your range extender?. Please hit on ‘as a wireless range extender’ option and tap on ‘next’.
Step 8:
When prompt, select your WiFi. Also, note down that if you have a dual-band WiFi network, then the WiFi network name of both the bands will be displayed. In that case, you have to hit the ‘refresh’ button to rescan your network.
Note: If your SSID (network name) is hidden, then select the ‘manually enter network name and password’. Otherwise, you have to wait for some time for it to have a full scan on your network.
Step 9:
Enter your WiFi security key (password)and hit the ‘next’ button.
Step 10:
Now, you will be prompt to configure your currently ‘extended network’. Change the name of your extended network according to your preference and click on ‘next’ once finished successfully.
Step 11:
The ‘spot finder’ will determine the signal strength and internet connectivity between your existing WiFi router and Linksys range extender. If your Linksys device is placed too far or too close, then choose the best location to place your device and jump back to step 3.
- Click on ‘next’ once done.
Note: The ‘spot finder’ feature is only available with the latest firmware version 1.0.04.008 and above.
Step 12:
Make your range extender secure by creating a unique and strong admin password for Linksys smart WiFi login. Do enter a ‘security hint’ and then click on ‘next’.
Once you are completed with the setup process, a ‘your extender is set up’ screen will be displayed. To access the setup and login page of your WiFi range extender, ensure that you are connected properly to its WiFi name.
