Lahore trains a large share of the people who later show in Karachi. That sentence annoys both cities, and it is still a useful starting map.
The National College of Arts sits in the first half of too many careers to treat it as one option among equals. The Punjab University College of Art and Design sits in plenty of the others. Graduates leave with a thesis, a group of peers, and a very local idea of what “the scene” means. The scene they meet next is less loyal to the thesis.
Training gives you a language. It does not give you a public name. The path between a jury and a stranger who can cite you is made of shows, photographs, and someone willing to write a paragraph that is not a compliment.
Rooms that already exist
Lahore is not waiting for a scene to be invented. Alhamra has been on the calendar for decades. The Zahoor ul Akhlaq Gallery at NCA has held a permanent collection since 1993, with work by painters, sculptors, designers, and printmakers. Private galleries have opened, closed, and reopened across Gulberg and beyond. The Lahore Biennale, over successive editions, brought international attention to a city that was already hanging work on a Tuesday.
In August and September 2026, NCA and PUCAD staged their first joint exhibition, Ra’naai-e-Khayal-o-Khat. The dates ran from 14 August to 3 September. Miniature and calligraphy shared space with mixed media. Faculty and students were both on the walls. A joint show does not merge two institutions. It does make the walk between them visible.
Karachi’s path looks different because the market looks different. Commercial galleries, a closer relationship to collectors, a city that is harder to cross for an opening. Islamabad’s calendar is thinner and more institutional, which is not the same as quieter in quality. A debut group show at Sienna Creative House in September 2026 was a reminder that a capital city can still host a first look that is not a state ceremony.
None of these rooms is “the” art world. An artist who only counts the room that invited them will misread the year.
What the path actually looks like
The romantic version is a solo show and a collector. The common version is less cinematic.
• A thesis display that ten people outside the class attend
• A group exhibition where your name is one of forty
• A gallery that asks for images and then goes silent
• A teaching job that buys another year of work
• A residency, if the timing and the passport cooperate
• A profile online that a curator can send without embarrassment
• Another group show, this time with a date someone wrote down
The silence in the middle is normal. It is not a sign that the work failed. It is a sign that the circuit is small and busy with its own friends. Friendship runs more of this than manifestos do. That is not corruption by default. It becomes a problem when the only way onto the wall is to already be in the group chat.
Photography of the work is the unglamorous gate. A strong painting, badly lit on a phone, loses to a weaker painting with a clean image. Artists hate this. Curators rely on it. The path includes the hour you spend getting the picture right.
Names a stranger can check
A gallery can introduce you to a room. It cannot introduce you to next year’s reader. That reader needs a page that still resolves.
PakistaniArt keeps profiles of Pakistani artists for that later click. Painters, sculptors, photographers, and other visual artists, with enough biography to separate one Aisha from another. Aisha Khalid, born in Faisalabad in 1972, is a useful example of why the page has to be specific. Neo-miniature, a practice built by altering a Mughal form rather than quoting it. “Famous artist” would have been an insult dressed as help.
Younger files matter just as much. Ajea Zahid, Karachi-born in 2000, NCA painting graduate in 2024, now in London for an MFA, is exactly the kind of name a directory loses if it only updates for retrospectives. The work is already being shown. The paragraph should not wait for a museum.
The publication also covers people who are not Pakistani and still sit in the same reading week. That is not mission drift. A student in Lahore looking at a British sculptor and a Faisalabad painter on the same afternoon is a real student. A directory that scolds the second search is organising ideology, not use.
The paragraph galleries rarely write
Galleries write invitations. Critics are supposed to write the other paragraph, the one that says what the pictures do when the opening is over. PakistaniArt’s about page is blunt on this. The desk says it does not rewrite press releases. Hold a culture magazine to that sentence. It is the difference between a path and a poster.
Submissions sit at submit@pakistaniart.pk. A gallery sending a release, and an artist sending three images and a date, are both trying to get onto the path. The second one is often more useful. Releases are written to be agreed with. Images can be looked at.
PakistaniArt was founded in Lahore in 2020 by Awais Shaukat, then a painting student at NCA, because English-language files on these careers were thin. The complete magazine came later, in 2026. The path between college and public name is the reason that timeline matters. A student who graduated into silence in 2021 needed a page. Some of them still do.
If you run a room, date the show and spell the names. If you make the work, photograph it like you expect a stranger to care. The stranger is the whole point of leaving the campus.
