While Roku is the most preferred streaming player, still there are many features, workarounds, and tips that can extend Roku’s content range and operational flexibility. Let’s take a look at the top Roku tips to enhance your streaming experience.
Watch free movies and TV shows
Roku offers a list of the most popular channels updated regularly, with free content. To view this list, press the Home button on your Roku remote control, go to the streaming channel. Then select the top free. From there, you can add any channel to your own list.
But remember for streaming free channels, your Roku device must have the Roku activation code. If you know the name of free channels to be added, you can go to the streaming channels and input to the search options to see if it is available on Roku.
Another way to find free movies and TV shows is to go to the search category on the main page and type in the movie or show title to see if it is available on the channels available on Roku and if you need any viewing fees.
Find 4K content
If you have a Roku device 4K support, you can view the 4K content to be viewed by clicking on the streaming channels and select UHD content. This provides a list of channels that provide 4K content. However, not all of these channels offer 4K content. You have to look at what they offer.
To make your 4K content search easier, you can also install the 4K Spotlight app from the roku.com/link channel store and find available shows and movies available in 4K on multiple channels.
Note: UHD content and the 4K Spotlight option is only visible on 4K Roku devices such as Roku 4, Premiere, Premiere +, Ultra, Streaming Stick + and 4K Ultra HD Roku TV.
Watch the wireless live TV
You can’t connect the antenna directly to Roku (except Roku TV), but you can use the Roku handle or box with an OTA (over the air) DVR or an external tuner. These devices will receive TV signals through the antenna and then wirelessly transfer them to your Roku streaming stick or box by installing their companion Roku app.
In addition, if you choose to use Tablo with a USB hard drive, you can also use Roku to schedule and play any content that Tablo can record onto its companion hard drive.
Eliminate buffering or freeze video
Some streaming services automatically adjust the video quality of their feeds based on your bandwidth speed, but some don’t. This means that sometimes you may encounter buffering of certain content, skipping or freezing because your internet speed is not fast enough.
In addition, you may have a monthly data limit, which means that if you watch too much streaming content in a particular month, you may have to pay an excess fee.
You can enter the secret menu and change the “bit rate” of the Roku receive stream signal. This can reduce problems such as buffering and freezing, and can save any data cap.
However, you may have to accept a lower quality video stream. To make this adjustment, press the home five times, RW three times, FF twice on your Roku remote. You can then choose to leave the settings as automatic (default) or set it to a specific rate.
Play content stored on a PC or other storage device
In addition to streaming media channels, the Roku Media Player app also allows you to access and play music, photos and videos from PCs and media servers connected to the same home network.
The application is also compatible with media server software platforms such as PlayOn, Plex, Serviio, Tversity, Twonky and Windows Meda Player.
In addition, if your Roku device or Roku TV has a USB port, you can play the contents of a USB flash drive. For more details on setup and use, including compatible digital media file formats, see the Roku Media Player support page.
