Buying a new bed cover is a lot tougher these days, than what it used to be. Earlier on there were fewer materials available and so the choice was usually limited, but now with the influx of different types of materials, the options have increased manifold.

Today the market is full of different types of stuff that caters to all segments and age groups. There is everything from cotton to bamboo, and ranging from synthetic to organic.

So what is the best option?
Should you buy Organic bed covers and sheets? Are they healthier and more durable than others?

This is a tough question to answer, but nevertheless important as bed covers protect the bedding and pillows throughout the day from dust, or other contamination and bring a sense of beauty and aesthetics into the bedroom.

Therefore, to answer this question, let’s examine the basic difference between non- organic and organic cotton that is used to make bed covers.

Non-organic cotton versus cotton produced by organic farming
Cotton is grown in many parts of the world and farmers routinely use pesticides and fertilizers to protect their crop from insects and diseases. However, the use of chemicals is rampant. As per data released by USDA for 2003, fifty-five million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on 12.8 million acres of land where conventional cotton was grown. Cotton thus produced has a lot of chemicals in it and is termed as in-organic cotton.

On the other hand, organic farming does not involve use of any toxic or persistent pesticides. Organic farming has no adverse affects on the environment. Rather organic farming methods replenish and maintain soil fertility, lessen usage of toxic and persistent fertilizers, and build a strong, biologically diverse agriculture.

Organic bed cover versus non-organic bed cover

Many people like using non-organic bed covers because:

    – They are easy-to-buy.
    – Special handling is not required.
    – They are sold at a lower price.
    – They are popular and widely available.

The downside is that the toxins and chemicals harm your health and the environment.

Why people prefer using organic bed covers?

Organic bed covers have gained popularity in the market for various reasons.

    – Strong-willed people have a set ideal to protect the environment and our planet Earth.
    – They are healthy to use and don’t damage the skin.
    – They are especially safe for children, as children have a lower immunity system.
    – People prone to allergies find them suitable.

The downside is that organic bed covers are expensive and their availability is sometimes limited.

Other materials that are used to make bed covers
Besides organic cotton there are many other materials that are used to make bed covers.

    Tencel
Tencel is the brand name of a fabric. It is derived from the wood pulp of a eucalyptus. Although quite cool, it is not as breathable as cotton.

    Silk
Silk is a natural fiber produced by silkworms. Since it is soft and has a luxurious feel, bed covers made out of silk are cool, silky and sensuous. Medically, Silk is beneficial since it is hypoallergenic. The downside is that silk is very expensive and difficult to take care of.

    Polyester
Polyester is a man- made fibre that is usually mixed with cotton to make a synthetic blended fabric.

    Nylon
Nylon gives the look of a satin bed cover that does not wrinkle. However, with usage it begins to pill up.

    Acrylic
Acrylic is another man-made material that is used in bed covers. It is wrinkle resistant and used for making colorful bed covers.

    Bamboo
Fabric made from bamboo fibers is known as rayon. It is as breathable as cotton, gives the look of a silky fabric and is easy on the skin as well.

    Conclusion:
Organic bed covers are recommended for use as their manufacturing process does not cause pollution to the air, water and soil and thus provides sustainability for planet Earth.
