3 Reasons to Choose a Custom AR 15 Handguard

For every firearm owner, there comes a time in which you’re ready to take your experience to the next level. For most, that time comes the moment you realize that the factory standard build of your favorite rifle just isn’t doing it for you. If you’re like many enthusiasts and have chosen an AR 15 as your go-to rifle, you probably already know just how customizable the AR 15 is. In this article, we’ll explore 3 reasons you should consider getting your hands on an aftermarket custom AR 15 handguard today.

    1. You Can’t Put a Price on Performance

Above and beyond any other factor in your customization decisions is whether or not the addition or modification will improve your firearms performance. This holds true as much for an AR 15 Handguard as it does for an optic. Every component of your firearm affects how you hold and use it, so choosing a handguard that fits your hands, is lightweight, keeps your hands away from heat, and is comfortable is going to have a big effect on your performance, and you’ll see when you finally make the switch.

    2. Material Matters

When it comes to building a custom firearm that will last, the materials your parts are made of do matter. Certain material types are better suited for specific parts. For example, polymer stocks can help lighten your firearm while providing you with the ability to directly attach a sling mount or give you extra storage. On the flip side, a polymer Bolt Carrier Group (BCG) (if such a thing exists) would be an extremely poor and dangerous choice of material for such an integral component.

Free float handguards on the other hand are best made from aluminum. There are a lot of variations out there made from all kinds of materials, but the industry standard is T6-6061 Type III Hard Coat Anodized aluminum. Be careful when shopping for cheaper handguards as a lot of times the company selling them will cut costs by skimping on the aluminum used. As a rule of thumb, stay away from rails made from T5-6063 aluminum. They may work well at first, however, the material is weaker than T6-6061 and will quickly break down over time. T5-6063 is not well suited for the long term stresses free float handguards must endure.

    3. RMIs Hurt!

The dangers of Repetitive Motion Injuries (RMIs) are unfortunately talked about less than they should be. We all like to think we can power through anything, but, in truth, we have to be careful with our bodies for the sake of performance, if nothing else. RMIs are complicated and sometimes even caused by improper ergonomic setups in the tools and equipment we use, and that includes our firearms. If you can get an RMI from something as simple as golf or tennis, it makes sense that having an ill-fitting and uncomfortable AR 15 handguard could be the first step in the development of an RMI.

The takeaway from this analysis is that parts matter – to your performance in shooting and to your health. If you’re beginning the customization of your gun, don’t fly solo.
