WAFs or Web Application Firewall was developed to have a more secure application or system than it was with the traditional firewall. A traditional firewall would allow the threats using authorize protocols like http and https, pass in the application. The attacks are camouflaged as forms on your system and appear authentic to the firewall; it lets the attack go inside your system from where the attacker can leak sensitive data or hack your system and use for their own benefits. A WAF prevents such situations.
Major benefits of WAFs
Protection – WAFs are very beneficial for online retailers and e-commerce websites, as they rely on storing the data privately and securely. They have loads of customer information stored online which can be vulnerable to the hackers and reveal the confidential information; the hackers could also use the bank details of the customers to steal money. WAF security prevents any type of entry to the hackers in any disguise. It monitors and controls all the traffic and filters the harmful ones.
Prevents data leakage – A WAF protects all the data on your website by stopping them from leaving the system to any unreliable source. Credit card numbers and source code are very crucial information and their leak would be a disastrous activity for your business. WAF scans every request to the application users, and any unusual activity would stop the information to leave the system.
Automated patches – A WAF provides temporary patches to any vulnerability found during the scan check. It is useful for small businesses that would not have the expertise or solution to fix the problem. The WAF takes the immediate action while scanning the systems for weak points. This is only a temporary solution however a strong one. You should get the vulnerability fixed as soon as possible by an expert.
