Why Does My Forex Trade Show a Loss Immediately After Opening

Opening your first forex trade can feel exciting, especially when you have spent time analysing a currency pair and waiting for the right opportunity. However, it can be confusing when you enter a trade and immediately see a loss on your trading platform.

You might wonder whether you entered at the wrong price, whether the market moved against you or whether your broker made a mistake. In many cases, the explanation is much simpler: trading costs, particularly the spread, can cause a position to show a small loss as soon as it opens.

Understanding why this happens is an important part of learning forex trading online. Once you know how spreads, commissions, price movements and execution work, you can interpret your account balance more accurately and avoid making unnecessary decisions.

    1. The Spread Is Usually the Main Reason

The spread is one of the most common reasons a forex trade shows a loss immediately after opening.

In forex trading, there are generally two prices for a currency pair: the bid price and the ask price.

    • Bid price: The price at which you can sell the currency pair.
    • Ask price: The price at which you can buy the currency pair.

The difference between these two prices is called the spread.

For example, imagine EUR/USD has the following prices:

    • Bid price: 1.1000
    • Ask price: 1.1002

If you open a buy trade, you normally enter at the ask price of 1.1002. However, if you were to close the position immediately, you would generally sell at the bid price of 1.1000.

The market would need to move in your favour enough to cover that difference before your trade could show a profit, assuming no other costs or price changes.

This is why a new trade may display a small negative amount straight away. It does not necessarily mean you made a poor trading decision or that something is wrong with your account.

    2. Your Broker May Charge a Commission

Another reason your trade might show a loss immediately is commission.

Some forex brokers earn money through the spread, while others offer tighter spreads and charge a separate commission for opening and closing trades. Certain account types combine both costs.

Suppose you open a position and your broker charges a commission when the trade is executed. Your platform may immediately include that charge in the displayed profit or loss.

Even if the market price has barely changed, your position could show a negative figure because the commission has already been deducted or accounted for.

Before opening a trade, check your broker’s pricing structure. Understanding whether your account uses spreads, commissions or both can help you estimate the cost of entering and exiting a position.

    3. The Market May Have Moved Against You

Although trading costs are a common explanation, the market itself could also be responsible.

Forex prices change constantly during active trading periods. The price can move against your position between the moment you place an order and the moment it is executed.

For example, you might decide to buy GBP/USD because you expect the price to rise. While your order is being processed, the market could move slightly lower.

Your position may then open at a price that is less favourable than the latest price displayed when you made your decision.

This is particularly noticeable during volatile market conditions, when prices can change quickly.

When learning forex trading online, remember that the price shown on your chart may not always be the exact price at which your order is executed.

    4. Understanding Slippage

Slippage occurs when an order is executed at a different price from the one you expected.

It can happen when the market moves quickly, available liquidity changes or there is a delay between submitting and executing an order.

For example, you may attempt to buy a currency pair at 1.2500, but the order is filled at 1.2503. If the market is now trading below your entry price, your position may begin with a larger loss than you anticipated.

Slippage is not always negative. Depending on market conditions, an order can sometimes receive a better price than expected. However, unfavourable slippage can increase trading costs.

It is worth paying particular attention to slippage around major economic announcements, central bank decisions and other events that can cause sudden price movements.

    5. Why Your Chart Price May Look Different

Have you ever opened a trade and noticed that the entry price does not seem to match the price on your chart?

This can happen because many charts display only one side of the market price, often the bid price by default. A buy order, however, generally executes at the ask price.

The difference between these prices is the spread.

Some platforms allow you to display both bid and ask prices on your chart. Enabling this feature can make it easier to understand why a trade appears to start at a loss.

You should also check whether your chart and trading account use the same broker’s price feed. Different providers may display slightly different prices because of their liquidity sources and pricing arrangements.

Small differences do not automatically indicate a problem.

    6. Wider Spreads Can Increase Your Initial Loss

Not all spreads remain the same throughout the trading day.

Some brokers offer fixed spreads, while others use variable spreads that change according to market conditions.

Variable spreads may widen during periods of low liquidity, major news announcements, market openings or other unusual conditions.

Imagine you normally trade EUR/USD with a spread of two pips. During a volatile period, the spread could become significantly wider, depending on your broker and account type.

A wider spread means the market needs to move further in your favour before the position can overcome that initial cost.

This is one reason beginners should pay attention to trading conditions rather than focusing only on the currency pair or the direction of the market.

    7. Leverage Can Make Losses More Noticeable

Leverage allows traders to control a larger position with a smaller amount of capital. While this can increase market exposure, it also means that relatively small price movements can have a noticeable effect on account equity.

For example, a trader using high leverage may open a position that is large compared with their account balance. Even a small adverse price movement can then create a meaningful loss.

It is important to distinguish between the spread-related loss and a loss caused by the market moving against you. Both can affect your account, but they arise for different reasons.

Leverage does not make the spread disappear. Instead, the size of your position determines how much that spread and any subsequent price movement affect your money.

Beginners should calculate position sizes carefully and avoid using more leverage than they can comfortably manage.

    8. Check Whether the Loss Is Realised or Unrealised

Another important concept is the difference between realised and unrealised profit or loss.

An unrealised loss is the current negative result on an open position. It can change as the market moves, and it may disappear if the market moves sufficiently in your favour.

A realised loss occurs when you close the position at a loss. The result is then locked in, although account statements may also reflect commissions and other charges separately.

Your trading platform may show several figures, including balance, equity, used margin and floating profit or loss.

The balance generally reflects completed transactions and applicable adjustments, while equity includes the current result of open positions. The exact presentation can vary by platform.

Understanding these figures helps you avoid confusing a temporary floating loss with a completed loss.

    9. How to Reduce the Cost of Opening a Trade

You cannot eliminate every trading cost, but there are practical ways to understand and manage them.

Compare spreads and commissions. Check the total cost of opening and closing a trade rather than looking at the advertised spread alone.

Avoid trading during unsuitable conditions. If spreads are unusually wide or prices are moving unpredictably, consider waiting until conditions improve.

Check your order settings. Understand whether you are using a market order, limit order or another order type, and learn how your broker executes each one.

Use an appropriate position size. Smaller positions can reduce the amount of money affected by a given pip movement.

Practise on a demo account. A demo account can help you learn how spreads, execution prices and floating losses appear on your particular platform without risking real money.

Review your trading costs. If you frequently open and close positions, even small costs can accumulate. Reviewing your trading history can help you understand their overall effect.

These habits are useful for anyone learning forex trading online because they encourage traders to evaluate the full cost of a position instead of focusing only on whether the market moves up or down.

    10. When Should You Contact Your Broker?

A small loss immediately after opening a trade is usually normal when it reflects the spread, commission or a minor price movement.

However, you should investigate if the loss appears unusually large or does not match the trading conditions you expected.

Start by checking the executed entry price, the current bid and ask prices, the spread, any commission and the size of your position.

You can then compare these details with your broker’s published trading conditions and transaction history.

If the figures still do not make sense, contact your broker’s support team and ask for an explanation of the execution and charges. Providing the order number, currency pair and execution time can help them investigate.

Avoid assuming that every unexpected loss is a technical error, but do not ignore a genuine discrepancy either.

    Final Thoughts

Seeing a loss immediately after opening a forex trade can be frustrating, particularly when you are new to trading. However, it is often a normal result of the spread, commission or a small movement in the market price.

Slippage, changing spreads and differences between chart prices and execution prices can also contribute to the initial negative figure.

The key is to understand what your platform is showing before deciding that something has gone wrong. Check your entry price, learn how your broker calculates trading costs and make sure your position size is appropriate for your account.

With a clearer understanding of these factors, you can approach forex trading online with more realistic expectations and make better-informed decisions about your trades.
