How to set up the Linksys RE6500 WiFi Extender
The RE6500 comes unencrypted, and it’s four-step Linksys smart wifi setup that does not require any knowledge of networks or firmware
You start by connecting the extender as a client to get the preset SSID, writing 192.168.1.1 in any window of a browser that we have open (works just as well with Internet Explorer as with Chrome, Firefox or Safari, which are the most used). At that time software for networks to extend and allows you to configure extended networks 2.4- and 5 GHz at the same time.
Its default value will use the same network name and access codes as the existing Wi-Fi network and it will extend. However, if you want a different configuration, it takes an additional minute to enter the new names and passwords. After a quick reboot, the extender will be ready and a print summary page of the settings will be displayed in the browser.
Once it is established, you can use the WiFi configuration button that it incorporates on the back to automatically link the device with a client that supports WPS. However, it works just as well if you configure the connections manually.
RE6500 Software/Firmware
The Linksys RE6500 software allows you to make numerous adjustments and small configurations in a simple and fast way. Apart from being able to assign new names to the networks and configure their encryption mode, the channel width can be adjusted, which is a measure of the amount of spectrum that is allocated to each channel.
On the other hand, the RE6500 has a built-in QoS service to prioritize traffic. It is based on WMM and can speed up VoIP phone calls, as well as video and online games.
Features of the Linksys RE6500 WiFi network extender
On the back, the Linksys RE6500 has four ports of Gigabit LAN cable for connecting network hard drives, printers and other devices of the style. However, it does not include the USB port that many of its competitors do offer. However, the RE6500 has the advantage of having a 3.5 mm headphone jack so that we can turn the device into a multimedia server that can be connected to a stereo system. Of the extenders we have reviewed, only the Netgear WN3500RP had a better connection potential through LAN, USB and audio ports.
On the other hand, instead of having a series of LED indicators, the illuminated bar of the RE6500 discreetly shows the state of the extender at a glance. It also has a reset button below to return the device to its factory settings.
